From simple poly-bags to multi-layer high-barrier technology.
Market Development History
From 2000 to 2010, the Paraguayan market was dominated by single-layer PE bags. These were sufficient for short-distance transport but failed to protect products during long-term storage in tropical heat.
Between 2011 and 2020, the introduction of lamination technology allowed for the adoption of tri laminate retort pouch designs. This shift enabled the local canning and sterilization industry to move toward lighter, more cost-effective flexible pouches without sacrificing sterility.
Since 2021, the focus has shifted toward "Smart Packaging," where UV protection and moisture barriers are optimized specifically for the South American climate to prevent oxidation of fats and oils in processed foods.
Future Development Trends
Circular Economy Integration
The adoption of compostable resins will replace traditional plastics, focusing on the biodegradable segment to align with new regional environmental regulations.
Active Packaging Systems
Integration of oxygen scavengers within the laminate layers to extend the freshness of organic Paraguayan exports without adding chemical preservatives.
Digital Brand Interaction
The use of QR codes on custom pouches to provide traceability from the farm in the Chaco region to the consumer's hand.
